2010 Pro Bowl Time

The 2010 Pro Bowl game is today and we’ve already covered the rosters so I suppose we’ll update everyone on the time, channel, and location.

Many are wondering about the bare essentials for the 2010 Pro Bowl game, so we gathered up all the important information like time, location, and channel to make sure our readers are in the know before the big game tonight.

We’ll start with the Pro Bowl time. You can catch the 2010 Pro Bowl live at a start time of roughly 7:20 PM ET. Normally the games get started a tick later then the predicted time so you should be good to go if you tune in 10 minutes past that supposed kickoff time.

BoDog Sportsbook has the Pro Bowl spread ready to go and it’s the NFC squad that is favored by 3 on the betting odds. You can also bet on the combined points scored and the odds there are at 58. Signing up with these guys is quick and easy so make sure to take advantage of their 10% free cash sign-up bonus offer.

The Pro Bowl is usually on CBS but we have a new channel for the 2010 version of this great game. ESPN will take over this time around and the reason the channel was switched this year is because CBS won the rights to broadcast the 2010 Grammy Awards tonight.

Last up is the 2010 Pro Bowl location and you might be surprised to hear that this year’s All-Pro game won’t be held in Hawaii like many previous versions. The Pro Bowl location got changed to Miami, Florida for this year and the game also got bumped up on the calendar despite the fact that many players have complained about the date swap. The location appears to be acceptable, however.

Shon Coleman "100% committed" to Auburn but keeps visiting

Shon Coleman, a five-star Rivals offensive lineman and four-star Scout prospect, recently said that he is "100% committed" to Auburn after announcing his verbal choice back in April of 2009. However, much to the chagrin of many War Eaglers, Coleman continues to visit various schools around the country as the countdown to signing day continues.

One such school should be of particular worry: Alabama. Because that's where Coleman just left en route to Miami.

That's not necessarily a disaster for Auburn, though -- as Evan Woodbery points out at Al.com, it's entirely possible that Coleman is simply getting the most out of the recruiting process, which is a totally reasonable thing to do if you're a high schooler already locked into attending college and like to hang out somewhere other than Olive Branch, Mississippi.

The likely result for Coleman is that he does end up signing with Auburn, and it's certainly hard to fault him for at least exploring his options. At the same time, though, it's also difficult not to get a little freaked out at the prospect of Coleman being intrigued by other options as he's touring the country.

Toyota Halts US Sales - Recall Models

DETROIT – Toyota Motor Co. said Tuesday that it would temporarily stop selling and building eight models for the American market, including the popular Camry and Corolla sedans, while it determines how to resolve a problem with accelerator pedals that can stick.

Link: Recall information

It took the unusual step five days after announcing a recall of 2.3 million vehicles for what it described as a "rare" condition in which the pedal can stick and cause a vehicle to speed up unintentionally.

"Toyota had a bulletproof reputation for quality, and now it's been tarnished," said Jim Hossack, an industry analyst at AutoPacific Inc. "It's a dramatic move, and an expensive move."

Halting sales and production of some of Toyota's best-selling U.S. models may mean hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue, said Hossack, who is based in Fountain Valley, Calif., and is a former engineer for Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp.

It has the potential to further damage a reputation that has been taking a beating from the latest recall and from a November recall of 4.2 million vehicles, the largest in Toyota's history.

Toyota said it would immediately stop selling the Camry, Corolla and Avalon sedans, Matrix wagon, RAV4 crossover, Tundra pickup, and Highlander and Sequoia sport utility vehicles. It will stop building those models the week of Feb. 1.

Pat Lobb, owner of Pat Lobb Toyota and Scion of McKinney, said the action will affect about 30 percent of the vehicles on his lot. It is aimed at Toyotas built in the United States, Lobb said, so dealers can still sell models built in Japan – including some versions of the popular Camry and Corolla sedans.

However, Lobb said, he also is "tagging" used vehicles affected by the recall as well, and he acknowledges that for dealers, "there will be some short-term pain."

"I've been with Toyota since 1969, and I've never been more proud to be a Toyota dealer," said Lobb, who worked for Toyota before becoming a dealer. "When you see them step up like this, it's encouraging." In fact, Lobb said, he instructed his staff Tuesday night to look for additional vehicles to buy from other dealers – even ones that will need the accelerator repairs.

"Some won't have the confidence in the company that I do," he said. "Will there be people concerned? You bet. But I say go look at Toyota over the long term. Look at their history. That's the reality."

The models affected accounted for more than 1 million sales in 2009, 57 percent of Toyota's total for the year.

"In this highly competitive market, no automaker – not even Toyota – can afford to stop selling its cars and trucks for long, but perhaps Toyota is banking on the idea that customers will appreciate the priority of their safety in this decision," Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst with Edmunds.com, a Web site that gives car-buying advice to consumers. "When an airline delays a flight for mechanical reasons, passengers may grumble, but on some level they're always grateful that the technical issue was found before they were midair."

The November recall was to fix a design flaw that could cause the gas pedal to become trapped under the floor mat. It was prompted in part by the crash of a Lexus sedan that sped out of control and crashed into a ravine near San Diego, killing four people.

But the automaker and federal safety officials continued to receive reports of unintended acceleration and stuck pedals even in cases where the floor mats had been removed, a stopgap measure recommended by Toyota.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been looking into two recent incidents in Texas and New Jersey. Four people died on Dec. 26 in Southlake when a Toyota Avalon – with its floor mats in the trunk – went off a road and landed upside down in a pond.

In announcing last week's recall, the company said the accelerator pedal could wear down and become difficult to depress, slow to spring back or stuck partly depressed.

Toyota does not have a solution for the problem yet, and it said drivers who experience it should depress the brake firmly and steadily, and then contact a dealer after the vehicle is in a safe location and turned off. Drivers who have not had a problem should wait for the company to develop a remedy before visiting their dealer.

"The problem seems to be getting larger than anyone was led to believe at first," said Erich Merkle, an analyst with Autoconomy.com in Grand Rapids. "A lot of those vehicles are probably in the garages of families. It gets people thinking, 'Would I want my wife and kids in the vehicle? Would they know what to do in a situation like that?' "

Together, the two recalls cover 4.8 million vehicles, including 1.7 million affected by both. The Prius hybrid and several Lexus models were included in the November recall but not in last week's action or the sales halt.

The automaker said the move would affect plants in San Antonio; Princeton, Ind.; Lafayette, Ind.; Georgetown, Ky.; and a facility in Ontario, Canada.

The Nuclear Tipping Point: Why a lot of people are curious about this book?

Just recently, a lot are searching about the book entitled “The Nuclear Tipping Point”. People are curious about this book and I think they want to read it. The Nuclear Tipping Point, Why States Reconsider Their Nuclear Choices. Foreword by Vartan Gregorian, Kurt M. Campbell, Mitchell Reiss and Robert Einhorn. The book was printed by Brookings Institution Press.

So why people are searching for it? The answer is simply because The Nuclear Tipping Point is related to Barack Obama’s UN security council summit on nuclear issues. It is a critical moment in the effort to eliminate nuclear weapons, thus, people are really curious to know more about it.

Well, because it’s the president, and whatever the president said, people are interested about it. Not all people, only the concerned few.

Harrington’s parents on way to scene of found remains

The parents of Morgan D. Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student missing since October, have been called to a farm off U.S. 29 south of Charlottesville, where police are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains.

Monica Caison, of the CUE Center for Missing Persons in North Carolina, said police have notified the Harringtons of the discovery and that the Roanoke couple is on the way to the site.
CUE was slated to start searching for Harrington, having been asked to assist in the case by her parents.

“I’ve talked to the Harringtons and they are on the way,” Caison said. “That area south of town is an area we were looking to search.”

A resident of Anchorage Farms, a 700-plus-acre tract of pasture and woods about fives miles south of Interstate 64 on the west side of U.S. 29, notified Albemarle County police this morning that he had found skeletal remains. County police later notified the Virginia State Police and turned the investigation over to the detectives heading the Harrington investigation.

The state police have been leading the investigation into the woman’s disappearance from a rock concert at the John Paul Jones Arena.

State and county police have scheduled a press conference at 5 p.m. today to discuss the discovery.

Source: Chicago Cubs, Xavier Nady agree on one-year deal

The Chicago Cubs and free-agent outfielder Xavier Nady have agreed to terms on a one-year contract pending a physical, according to a major league source.

Nady will get a $3.3 million base salary from the Cubs, with performance bonuses that could bring his deal to $5.35 million, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

After having a second Tommy John surgery on his right arm in 2009, Nady, 31, is said to be doing well on his rehab. Nady's best season came in 2008 when he batted .305 with 25 home runs and 97 runs batted in for the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees.

Nady was one of 14 players with a .300 batting average and 25 home runs that season. He batted .317 against right-handers in 2008 and .262 against lefties. Over the past three seasons, Nady is a .297 hitter against right-handed pitching.

The Cubs had been looking at several candidates to fill their fourth outfielder spot, including Jermaine Dye, Reed Johnson and Jonny Gomes.

Actor and child star Gary Coleman was arrested in Utah after police received reports of a “civil disturbance” at his home, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Records obtained by the paper show the 41-year-old was booked into the Utah County Jail Sunday on “suspicion of domestic assault.” But according to a press statement by Santaquin police, Coleman was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court in a previous case Gary was also arrested in Utah in 2008 after a man claimed Coleman tried to run over him in a parking lot when he tried to take a picture with the child star. SMH! Gary Coleman packs big trouble in that little frame - and he's too short for his wife to duck - LOL!

Leslie West Wife

Leslie West has gained fame the world over during his 30-plus year career as one of the most innovative and influential musicians in the history of rock music. He is most noted for his role as leader of the explosive hard rock trio, Mountain, which was named by VH-1 as one of the Top 100 Hard Rock Groups of all time. With Mountain, he climbed the heights of rock stardom on the strength of a unique, signature guitar sound and classic songs such as “Mississippi Queen”, “Never In My Life” and “Theme From An Imaginary Western”,and Nantucket Sleighride which are still staples of rock radio to this day. Leslie has earned the admiration of a long list of famous peers. During his career, he has recorded or played with a litany of rock icons including Billy Joel, Van Halen, The Who, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix, to name just a few. In fact, Eddie Van Halen, Michael Schenker and Richie Sambora have all cited Leslie as an important influence on their own music.

Leslie’s bold, expressive and unique guitar style is really a mirror of his own personality. Spend a little time talking with this larger-than-life figure, and you’ll realize that he is as charismatic without a guitar in his hands as he is with one. Possessing a sharp sense of humor, he is at once gregarious and gruff while recounting stories from his legendary past. And when discussing his newest projects, he exudes an infectious enthusiasm and excitement.

But Leslie has never been one to rest on his impressive laurels. His boundless creativity has often involved him in projects that take him outside his traditional roles of guitarist, singer and songwriter.

In 1986, he acted alongside Tom Hanks and Shelley Long in the hit comedy film, The Money Pit and has lent his distinctive voice to the popular animated series, Beast Wars Transformers which ran for three seasons on the WB network beginning in 1996 before going into syndication. He has also contributed the theme music to the new WB show, Mutant X.

Leslie has long been a popular personality on the Howard Stern Radio Show and was Musical Director for the shock jock’s FOX series, as well as for the late comedian Sam Kinison. Most recently, he lent his production and songwriting skills to an album by Atlantic Records’ modern rock group, Clutch, and has just released his own instructional guitar DVD, Big Phat Ass Guitar.

Leslie West has been a creative force for over three decades and shows no sign of losing his ambition or his desire to continually reinvent himself. His ability to adapt his creative spirit to a diverse range of projects is a key ingredient in the longevity of this multi-faceted entertainer’s success. All humans have a unique fingerprint. In the world of guitar, Leslie has that distictive sound and tone that is unique to him. There many clones, but few who have voice of their own. When Leslie hits a note, you know it's him and that's what makes him one of a kind.

Paraguay striker Cabanas shot in bar fight

Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas is in intensive care after being shot in the head during a bar fight, Mexico City's attorney general has confirmed.

The 29-year-old striker, who was visiting the establishment with friends and relatives, was attacked early in the morning at the bar in the south of Mexico City.

"He was shot in the head," prosecutor Miguel Angel Mancera, told the news channel Televisa. "According to an initial report it was a shot from a firearm with a frontal entry point and without exit."

"We don't clearly know the motive behind the injury ... The player is conscious but he has a heart problem which they're trying to stabilise.

"We're waiting to see what those arrested have to say. It seems that the attack happened in the bathroom of the bar.''

Cabanas is a prolific goalscorer for Primera División de México side America - scoring 18 goals in 24 matches this season - and he is an integral part of Paraguay's national side.

The former Paraguayan Footballer of the Year was expected to feature in the World Cup in South Africa where La Albirroja are in Group F with Italy, Slovakia and New Zealand.

Jets Vs Colts Game Time Approaches for Latest Historic Clash

The Jets vs Colts game time is now hours away. At 3 pm est, the Jets vs Colts game time will begin the NFL's Championship Sunday, and settle who's going to the Super Bowl. Today's AFC championship game in Indianapolis would be considered no contest, under normal circumstances. Since
Jets Vs Colts Game Time Approaches for Latest Historic Clash

Indianapolis has nearly been perfect, and New York has come from nowhere, virtually everyone would expect a breezy win for Peyton Manning and friends. But as the Jets vs Colts game time approaches, certain factors have to give pundits pause.

Though Indianapolis is the heavy favorite, New York has taken up much of the buzz for the AFC championship game. That can happen when the Jets have a headline-making head coach in Rex Ryan, a rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez, an increasingly notorious defense, and a Cinderella story.

Of course, a big talking point before the Jets vs Colts game time involves past and present history. 41 years ago, the 1969 Jets and their brash headline makers upset the Colts and changed football forever. The stakes aren't that historic today, yet this Colts team will go down in utter infamy if they get upset as well.

For a month, the Colts were roundly criticized for pulling their starters against the Jets in Week 16, and passing up a perfect season. Yet after Indianapolis throttled Baltimore last week, and proved that the rest did them good, it looked like they had finally put Week 16 behind them - until New York beat San Diego. Now if they let the Jets get to the Super Bowl, it will be their own fault for not eliminating them in the regular season.

As the Jets vs Colts game time nears, New York is building themselves up for another historic upset, thanks to Rex Ryan's massive confidence. If they lose and prove Ryan wrong, some may be happy to see him taken down a peg, but his overall success this year will balance that out.

But while Ryan has little to lose, Jim Caldwell will be raked over the coals yet again for Week 16 with a loss, and Peyton Manning's legacy will take a hit. Since all the starters will play the entire game - unless the Jets' defense knocks some people out - there is no excuse this time for Indianapolis.

Jenny From Frank the Entertainer And Nude Sexy Photos

Jenny from Frank the Entertainer is gaining popularity, but why? Jennifer Jones, Frank the Entertainer’s contestant is coming up out of nowhere and taking the Internet by storm. “Frank the Entertainer” is an MTV reality TV dating show spinoff from “I Love New York” and “I Love Money”

So what about Jenny from Frank the Entertainer?

We all know Frank – the contestant everyone loved to hate in both the “Flavor of Love” spinoff “I Love New York” and two seasons of “I Love Money.” The thirty-something man was known best for being unemployed and living in his parents basement.

Said basement is the landscape for his dating show, and Jenny Jones is one of the “Frank the Entertainer” contestants. Why is she gaining popularity? FRANK FOUND A NUDE PHOTO OF HER ON THE INTERNET!!!

One would almost roll off the couch laughing at that. Could you imagine dating someone, surfing online through porn and then finding a nude photo of her?

Two questions;

Why was Frank the Entertainer looking at nude photos online?

Why was Jenny from Frank the Entertainer nude …. online?

The nude photo in and of itself isn’t the shocker. The shocker is that she pretended to be ultra-conservative. The nude photograph of Jenny Jones was enough to get the contestant eliminated.

She was asked to leave the basement, and Frank the Entertainer won’t be hooking up with Jennifer Jones any time soon (at least not in person…)

Johnny Depp died in car crash? NO Depp's in France!

Johnny Depp died in car crash? The Internet is, once again, swirling with the kind of false information that drives Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark nuts. In this video interview, Craig Newmark talked about the false information that's consistently issued. This story of "Johnny Depp, died in car crash" is a good example.

Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in Alice and Wonderland.

This started on Twitter and as of this writing continues with the hashtag "RIP Johnny Depp", but the vast majority of tweets report that the story is a hoax. But even with that, a website URL www.angelfire.com has a fake CNN webpage that reports Johnny Depp died in a car crash in...2004.

This is a terrible hoax on Johnny Depp and CNN. Johnny Depp was very much alive and about to film Pirates of The Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, which was released in 2006. Angelfire is a web hosting service. It's hard to tell just who made the fake CNN page, which is so detailed that if you click on the CNN logo, it takes you to the CNN home page, just as a regular CNN webpage would do.

But the question is who and why?

Regardless, Crispin Glover reportedly ended the talk by calling Johnny Depp via cell. Depp responded: Nope. In France, according to NBC Chicago's Courtney Hazlett, who issued the news last Monday.

Stay tuned.

Air America to Cease Broadcasting Immediately

The left-wing radio network that launched the careers of Sen. Al Franken and MSNBC political commentator Rachel Maddow announced today that it will be going under.

As in closed. Off-the-air. Silent. Dead.

AA almost made it to age 6.

Its live programming will cease this afternoon, and the company plans to file for bankruptcy "to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business," wrote Air America Chairman Charlie Kireker in a statement to employees.

"The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America's business," Kireker wrote. "This past year has seen a 'perfect storm' in the media industry generally."

The New York-based Air America kicked off in March 2004, aiming to be the antithesis of Rush Limbaugh's and Sean Hannity's shows. In comparison to the staunch, multimillion followings of those commentators, Air America didn't quite hit the mark or even come close. An insufficient number of people tuned in.

Although, one of Air America's own did manage to get elected to senatorial office. But that was no help for the balance sheet.

Air America has already filed once for bankruptcy in October 2006. It appears as though the station won't come flying out of this next one.

Tefillin Confused for Bomb Device on La Guardia Flight

A pious teenage Jew wearing tefillin during impromptu morning prayers aboard a flight from La Guardia to Louisville this morning was detained by Homeland Security after airline officials identified him as a potential security threat, and diverted the flight to Philadelphia.
Tefillin is a harmless — but uncomfortable — set of boxes (containing prayers) and straps that some Orthodox Jewish men wear as a demonstration of faith. After the plane was searched and declared clear, the teen and his sister were labeled "disruptive" and taken for questioning. Gothamist raises an excellent question after this story: Will this change outspoken Jewish Assemblyman Dov Hikind's position on using ethnic profiling in airport security?

Claire Danes showing nipples in see through dress

Claire Danes showing nipples in see through dress – If getting more attention for her new film Me and Orson Welles was her goal, then it’s mission accomplished for Claire Danes and her nipples. Yes, Claire Danes thought she didn’t have much to hide (and really she’s right), but thanks to those flash bulbs (and a little digital enhancement by yours truly) we can totally see Claire Danes’ nipples through her rather sheer dress.

Claire Catherine Danes (born April 12, 1979) is an American actress, perhaps best known for her role as Angela Chase in the television series My So-Called Life, and for starring in films such as Romeo + Juliet (as Juliet), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (as Kate Brewster) and Stardust (as Yvaine). She has received a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination for My So-Called Life, and has also worked in theatre and as a voice actor (Princess Mononoke).

Conan O'Brian Introduces the World to the Bugatti Veyron Mouse

Mouse isn’t exactly the type of name you’d expect to see for a supercar–unless maybe you’re a disgruntled Conan O’Brien f-ing with NBC. Earlier tonight, Conan unveiled his $1.5-million Bugatti Veyron disguised as a giant mouse. Hideous? Yes. But when you’re trying to waste as much of NBC’s money by doing bits that “aren’t so much funny as they are crazy expensive”, it sure gets the point across.

Just before the bit, Conan makes a clear dig at Jay Leno, stating that he’d like to bring out all the staff children born during his stint at The Tonight Show, but since he was only on for seven months, all he’s got is hampsters. Go Coco!

Pete Sheppard fired from WEEI

Pete Sheppard, who spent more than 10 years as a contributor and fill-in host on sports-radio WEEI's "The Big Show," has had his position eliminated by Entercomm Communications, which owns the station.

"As we continue to operate in challenging economic times, it is with regret that we announce today that we have eliminated Pete Sheppard’s position as sports anchor on "The Big Show," said Entercom New England vice president and market manager Julie Kahn and vice president of AM programming Jason Wolfe in a press release. "We’d like to thank Pete for his outstanding work . . . [and wish him] the best of luck in his future endeavors and remain extremely grateful for all his contributions over the past decade."

Sheppard, 42, had been at WEEI since 1994, when he joined the station in a part-time capacity. In 1999, he began co-hosting a weekend show with Jon Wallach, and in '99 he moved to the highly successful "The Big Show," where he provided sports updates during breaks, bantered with host Glenn Ordway and the rotating co-hosts, and generally served in the role of a boisterous if occasionally buffoonish everyman with a genuine passion for sports during the drive-time program. Alongside ex-players Fred Smerlas and Steve DeOssie, he also hosted the "Real Postgame Show" following Patriots games.

The news of Sheppard's departure comes as a surprise. The native of Narragansett, R.I., signed a three-year contract with the station in May 2007.

National Penguin Awareness Day

National Penguin Awareness Day 2010. Happy National Penguin Awareness Day! Yes, it’s January 20th again and it’s our little flippered friends’ day to get some attention, aside from some little ceremony that’s happening on the east coast (j/k – congratulations, Mr. President!).

Anyway, be sure to take some time today to learn or do something relating to penguins whether it be learning more about them, visiting them at the zoo or aquarium, reading awesome books about them, or even just spending countless hours on flickr or YouTube looking at them. Here’s a few to get you started.

Today is Penguin Awareness Day! Did you know:

* A penguin colony becomes a source of heat in cold weather
* The colony provides protection from predators
* The young in a penguin colony form a nursery, or crèches, leaving both parents free to fish together

Graco Strollers Recall

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a Graco stroller recall Wednesday that will total 1.5 million strollers. The recall concerns uncovered hinges on the canopy of the Graco Passage, Alano, and Spree strollers, which have caused seven severe injuries to toddler's fingers, according to the CPSC.

The strollers in question were sold between October 2004 and February 2008 at several dozen retailers including Target, Wal-Mart, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, and Sears. The strollers cost between $80 and $200.

If you bought a Graco stroller during that period, check the stroller's model number against the chart at the bottom of this page or check out the CPSC's news release. (You can find the stroller's model number and manufacture date on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.)

If you have one of the problem strollers, stop using it immediately, the CPSC warns, and order a repair kit from Graco. You can find those order forms here. or by calling 800-345-4109. (Be forewarned: The Graco website was operating extremely slowly at 10 a.m. EST, probably due to the increased traffic the recall is generating.)

The company has set up a FAQ post regarding the recall on it's blog. Graco is also responding to stroller owners via Twitter.

Customers outside the United States are also eligible for the recall, according to Graco.

Graco says the repair kits will be available in one to two weeks. Once you've received the kit, an instructional video at the bottom of this post demonstrates how to properly attach the kit.

Graco has now had the two largest American stroller recalls on record. A 2005 recall of two Graco models that failed to latch properly resulted in 230 injuries and the recall of 1.1 million strollers. In November, British stroller manufacturer Maclaren recalled a million strollers in the US due to a hinge issue similar to that of the latest Graco recall. Democrat Coakley concedes in race for Massachusetts

Republican Scott Brown has won the race for the US Senate seat in the state of Massachusetts left vacant by Edward Kennedy's death.

Democrat Martha Coakley conceded she had lost the election after partial results gave Mr Brown a healthy lead.

Ms Coakley said she was "heartbroken by the result" and says she will be honest about the assessment of the race.

Tornado warning in southern California

LOS ANGELES: A rare tornado warning was issued for Los Angeles on Tuesday as a storm slammed into southern California, dumping heavy rain and
snow across the region and leaving thousands of homes without power.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Kittell said a strong storm moving in from the Pacific Ocean and packing winds of around 60 miles per hour had triggered the tornado alert.

"We don't have any physical evidence of a tornado, but our radars indicated it is spinning rapidly so there's a good chance of a tornado at the surface," Kittell told AFP.

Powerful storm fronts developing at sea often weakened by the time they made landfall, Kittell cautioned, admitting that tornado alerts in sun-baked California were "pretty rare."

"We do get them from time to time but they are pretty rare," he said.

The storm rolling into southern California on Tuesday followed a similar weather front which deluged the region 24 hours earlier.

Authorities placed hillside communities on alert for flash flooding and mudslides, a major concern in regions affected by raging wildfires last year.

Tuesday's storm was one of a series of wet weather fronts forecast to hit southern California this week, which are expected to drop as much as 16 inches of rain in some areas.

Local power companies reported Tuesday that engineers were working to restore power to nearly 17,000 customers suffering outages because of the weather.
